Journal Chapter 4

Do you think language and culture are related Why?How?

Well thats a good question is because language is something that is not totaly related to culture but the languge is one of the bases of the culture...why? because many of the things that the cultuire have is because the language included....for example in Costa Rica we have say things like:"Pura Vida" or "Mae" that are "Words" that only was said in Costa Rica.

Between spanish  and english we dont have like alot of similaryties yhere is only like some phrases that we said tht in english are the same thing

Well learn spanish is something that if you life in latinamerica you would understand easily but if you came from bnorthamerica is something very dificult not like the english that is something that you klearn without of problems because the tenses and the grammar is too basic but for somebody that learns with bads teachers is too dificult and you would have a lot of problems.

Journal Chapter 7

Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. The term comes from the Greek word ethos, which means "character". Ethics is a complement to Aesthetics in the philosophy field of Axiology. In philosophy, ethics studies the moral behavior in humans and how one should act. Ethics may be divided into four major areas of study:
Meta-ethics, about the theoretical meaning and reference of moral propositions and how their truth values (if any) may be determined
Normative ethics, about the practical means of determining a moral course of action
   Applied ethics, about how moral outcomes can be achieved in specific situations;
Descriptive ethics, also known as comparative ethics, is the study of people's beliefs about morality         Ethics seeks to resolve questions dealing with human morality—concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice and crime.
This is the definition of ethics.
Well for a country it would be dificult to be or survive whithout politics and religion because you dont have an especific point in your live like believing in God or something religious and whitout politics it wont be the same because there were not rules and it will be a desorder and a place of anarchy.

India

Well first i want to say that india is a place that capture my interest and my mind for a time, and i have been waiting for this moment the moment that i have to investigate about their products, perspectives, and practices so now i am going to gave some information about this place that i searched.

Religion

India is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, collectively known as Indian religions. Indian religions, also known as Dharmic religions are a major form of world religions along with Abrahamic one. Today, Hinduism and Buddhism are the world's third and fourth-largest religions respectively, with over 2 billion followers altogether, and possibly as many as 2.5 or 2.6 billion followers.
India is one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, with some of the most deeply religious societies and cultures. Religion still plays a central and definitive role in the life of many of its people.
According to a 2002 census of India, the religion of 80% of the people is Hinduism. Islam is practised by around 13% of all Indians. The country had over 23 million Christians, over 19 million Sikhs, about 8 million Buddhists and about 4 million Jains.
Sikhism, Jainism and especially Buddhism are influential not only in India but across the world. Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and the Bahá'í Faith are also influential but their numbers are smaller. Atheism and agnostics also have visible influence in India, along with a self-ascribed tolerance to other people.

Perceptions

According to industry consultant Eugene M. Makar, for example, traditional Indian culture is defined by a relatively strict social hierarchy. He also mentions that from an early age, children are reminded of their roles and places in society. This is reinforced, Makar notes, by the way many believe gods and spirits have an integral and functional role in determining their life. Several differences such as religion divide the culture. However, a far more powerful division is the traditional Hindu bifurcation into non-polluting and polluting occupations. Strict social taboos have governed these groups for thousands of years, claims Makar. In recent years, particularly in cities, some of these lines have blurred and sometimes even disappeared. He writes important family relations extend as far as gotra, the mainly patrilinear lineage or clan assigned to a Hindu at birth. In rural areas & sometimes in urban areas as well, it is common that three or four generations of the family live under the same roof. The patriarch often resolves family issues.
Others have a different perception of Indian culture. According to an interview with C.K. Prahalad by Des Dearlove, author of many best selling business books, modern India is a country of very diverse cultures with many languages, religions and traditions. Children begin by coping and learning to accept and assimilate in this diversity. Prahalad - who was born in India and grew up there - claimed, in the interview, that Indians, like everyone else in the world, want to be treated as unique, as individuals, want to express themselves and seek innovation.

Wedding Rituals

Weddings are festive occasions in India with extensive decorations, colors, music, dance, costumes and rituals that depend on the religion of the bride and the groom, as well as their preferences. The nation celebrates about 10 million weddings per year, of which over 80% are Hindu weddings.
While there are many festival-related rituals in Hinduism, vivaha (wedding) is the most extensive personal ritual an adult Hindu undertakes in his or her life. Typical Hindu families spend significant effort and financial resources to prepare and celebrate weddings. The rituals and process of a Hindu wedding vary depending on region of India, local adaptations, resources of the family and preferences of the bride and the groom. Nevertheless, there are a few key rituals common in Hindu weddings - Kanyadaan, Panigrahana, and Saptapadi; these are respectively, gifting away of daughter by the father, voluntarily holding hand near the fire to signify impending union, and taking seven steps before fire with each step including a set of mutual vows. After the seventh step and vows of Saptapadi, the couple is legally husband and wife.

Cuisine

Food is an integral part of every human culture. Chang notes that the importance of food in understanding human culture lies in its infinite variability - a variability that is not essential for species survival. For survival needs, people everywhere could eat the same and some simple food. But human cultures, over the ages, experiment, innovate and develop sophisticated cuisines. Cuisines become more than a source of nutrients; they reflect human knowledge, culture, art and expression of love.

  1. Hello! I think it is a good description of the movie.
We can identify the five dimensions of culture in this case, for example:
    1. Products: potions, lab instruments, guitar, musical instruments, the theater, jail etc.
    2. Practices: try potions, play instruments, people playing plays on theaters, the major and his actions against the monster, etc.
    3. Communities: artists, scientists, people living in Paris.
    4. Perspectives: the men didn't expect to create a big insect, the girl didn't expect that the monster would sing, etc.
    5. People: the girl, the monster, the doctor, the two men, major of Paris, etc.

  2. Comment for Chapter 7 journal: I think the way in which you described ethics is very illustrating and clear. By describing each of its areas of study, one can have a better view about what they are all about. In my opinion they are a "must" that everyone should take very seriously, even though what is ethical for me, will not necessarily be right for someone else. Because of that, one needs to be tolerant and not be led by the first impressions. This last attitude is especially necessary in the globalized culture in which we are immersed.

  3. I think just as you do, Indian culture is amazing. From their religion to their perspectives and practices, they are so different from our occidental view of the world. These differences are what make interacting with other cultures such a valuable experience. I find specially interesting the facts about their wedding rituals, maybe the steps symbolize something like the new road the newlyweds will begin walking.
